Don’t waste your time chasing dreams that won’t make you happy
Many people spend years, sometimes decades, chasing a goal without ever stopping to ask if it will actually make them happy.
They dream about the moment they get their first supercar, luxury watch, or a million in the bank.
They convince themselves that once they reach that point, life will feel complete.
But when they get there, they often realize it feels nothing like they imagined.
The excitement wears off, and the things you worked incredibly hard to achieve do not bring the fulfilment you expected.
The answer is not to give up on ambition or live without purpose. It is to first sit down, work out what you truly believe will make you happy, and then put in the effort to reach those goals.
Ask yourself these questions and be brutally honest:
Am I achieving my goals mainly so other people will like or respect me?
Do I enjoy the process enough to keep doing it for years?
If I reached my goals today, would they still make me happy a year from now?
Is the cost of chasing them worth what I am giving up?
Finding the right goals starts with understanding what truly matters to you, not what looks impressive to others.
Look back at the moments in your life when you felt the most satisfied and fulfilled, and write down what you were doing, who you were with, and why it mattered.
Think about what you want your average day to look like, not just the day you reach your goal.
Strip away the expectations of friends, family, and society, and focus on what would make you proud of how you spend your time. Then test your ideas by taking small steps toward them before committing years of effort. If the process feels rewarding even in small doses, it is a strong sign you are heading in the right direction.
Chasing your dreams is far better than sitting on the couch waiting for good things to happen.
But you need to choose your dreams carefully, or you risk spending years working toward something that will not improve your life.
